Cheshire Youth Justice Service: Using social prescribing to reduce reoffending among young people

Cheshire Youth Justice Service have focussed on addressing young people’s unmet health needs to tackle reoffending. The creation of the Cheshire-wide youth justice partnership in 2017 highlighted inequalities in justice-involved children’s health provision, which they have worked to address, and are now taking an innovative social prescribing approach to meet the wider health needs of their youth justice cohort.

Swindon YJS Kindness Room

To support children and families by providing free household equipment and food that can be taken home from the office. The Kindness room has been filled by donations from the local community and staff. One of the recent staff activities was a challenge to engage with the local community and in doing this, donations that can support children and families have been received.

The key aim of this study is to consider the following questions:
1. Are participants on the ECM project more or less likely to reoffend than those in the control group?
2. Is repeat reoffending lower or higher for those on the ECM project compared to the control group?
3. Is the severity of the offences committed by those who did reoffend from the ECM programme different to those in the control group?
