Description:
The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry has published a short paper on developmental language disorders and risk of recidivism among young offenders (2021).
The aim of the paper is to increase the knowledge and evidence concerned with the prevalence or potential impact of developmental language disorder on the risk of recidivism in children with a history of contact with the criminal justice system.
Developmental language disorder is a type of speech, language and communication need. Children with developmental language disorder are usually as able and healthy as other children in all ways, with one exception; they have difficulty talking and understanding language.
The paper found that the children with developmental language disorder were twice as likely to re-offend within a year of a Court Order than their peers involved in the youth justice without developmental language disorder.
