Diversion for Driving Matters programme from Derby Youth Justice Service
Summary:
Derby Youth Justice Service, Derby Police and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) have partnered to develop an alternative disposal for children committing road traffic offences. The disposal is designed to reduce the number of first-time entrants to the youth justice system in Derby, to promote rehabilitation and reduce offending.
Description:
They have shared a presentation which provides some background on the driving diversion offer. It was identified that a number of children were receiving fines for driving matters in Derby, so the driving diversion disposal was developed to help children avoid entering the ‘formal’ youth justice system, prevent future reoffending and provide an education programme to help develop driving knowledge.
The presentation outlines the steps that Derby has undertaken to develop their driving diversion offer. This includes working with the CPS and courts to secure overall agreement for the process, working with the police to agree the disposal and the programme delivery itself.
