Everton in the Community, Safe Hands Project (reducing re-offending)

Summary:

Safe Hands Programme is an intervention designed to support young people to reduce their likelihood of further re-offending.

Description:

The Safe Hands Programme is designed to support young people to reduce likelihood of re-offending, through offering a positive diversion from negative social influences. The programme supports young people to address the often complex issues that led to their offending, allowing them to develop emotional coping strategies to reduce the risk of further offending.

The Programme is offered both to male and female young people, aged 10 -19, from Merseyside. Specialist Everton in the Community (EITC) staff work alongside regional custodial facilities, Youth Offending Services and other regional partners, to implement a comprehensive programme of activities through 3 stages (pre, mid and end of season) to support all areas of a young person- development. Please see attached for the breakdown of work that is undertaken at each of the three stages.

Implementing the Practice:

  • Wirral YOT have been working with the Everton In the Community team since 2012.
  • In Wirral YOT, young people that are serving custodial sentences and community orders are able to access the programme.
  • Wirral YOT makes direct contact with the Safe Hands team to discuss the referral. If the young person is eligible for the programme, the Safe Hands team will then work with the young person.
  • The Programme is funded by the Premier League Charitable Fund.
