Flintshire Youth Justice Service’s Soft Outcomes Tool

Summary

Flintshire Youth Justice Service has designed a tool to gather information from children about how they feel about various aspects of their lives, including mental health, school and substance misuse.

Description

The Soft Outcomes Tool aims to assist youth justice practitioners in gathering information from children in an easy, non-invasive manner about how they feel about ten main areas of their lives. These are:

  • Accommodation
  • Sexual health
  • Mental health and wellbeing
  • Community behaviour
  • School and education
  • Substance misuse
  • Motivation and ambitions
  • Managing emotions
  • Offending behaviour
  • Relationships and family

The practitioner uses the star rating format to ask the child to rate each specific subject with their current feelings, with 1 being ‘Not very well’ and 3 being ‘Going well. Brilliant’. The tool can be used as a gateway to open up discussion with the child in areas of their life that they feel are not going so well or could be improved. It can also be used as a reflection tool to show the child’s progress after intervention.

The tool has been implemented successfully at Flintshire YJS and adopted as business as usual.
