Northumbria Violence Reduction Unit has developed guidance for schools and pupil referral units (PRUs) for managing knife and offensive weapon carrying incidents on school premises.
Description:
The protocol has been developed from the South Tyneside Safeguarding Children Partnership Knife Weapon Crime Protocol and aims to:
- Provide a consistent approach for schools and PRUs when dealing with knives and other offensive weapons
- Share good practice on event recording, searching and the safe handling of knives and weapons
- Explain the legal requirements relating to such an event
- Outline the expectations of school staff where a child brings a knife or weapon into school
- Provide information and guidance which sits alongside a school or PRU’s own policies
- Outline what will happen when the police become involved
