Mankind programme from South Gloucestershire Youth Justice Service
Summary:
South Gloucestershire Youth Justice Service’s Mankind programme is designed to support young boys to develop a pro-social identity.
Description:
The programme aims to raise awareness of typical male stereotypes, and consider that they may not be a true representation of what a man is, looks like and their role in today’s society.
The programme can be easily broken down so practitioners can choose which parts children participate in. This resource is designed to support conversations with boys and young men about who they are, what influences them, what it means to be a man and who they would like to be going forward.
There are 6 parts to the programme which outline what it is to be a man and the influences in everyday life that might affect young boys’ perceptions of how men should act and behave.
The 6 parts of the programme
Part 1. What do you think of when you think of male characteristics?
This section explores words that could be used to describe what boys think being a man means.
Part 2. News stories, social media and advertising
This is an opportunity to explore videos relating to ideas of masculinity. Please note, there is strong language in the Ronnie Pickering video so it is not suitable for younger children and discretion is advised.
Part 3. Growing up
This section explores how children are influenced from a young age through toys, games and films.
Part 4. Gender rules
This section looks at the gender rules which can be ingrained in society and the impact for those who don’t follow traditional gender norms.
Part 5. Principles and values
This section discusses what principles and values are.
Part 6. Who are you?
This section uses the ‘build a person activity’ to help boys shape an idea of who they would like to work towards being in the future.
