NOMS Intervention – ACCESS (July 2016)
Summary:
This intervention is aimed at increased self-esteem, motivation, problem solving and communication skills of children to help them manage custodial environments more effectively.
Description:
ACCESS is a NOMS YPE Approved group Intervention (Prison Service Order [PSO] 4350: Effective Regime Interventions: Young People- Annex) for vulnerable children who display difficulties coping and engaging in the custodial environment due to their low self-esteem and confidence. This could be due to a variety of reasons including; bullying, their physical presentation, self-harming behaviour or worries about being in a custodial environmental.
ACCESS enables these children to be able to develop the appropriate skills to be able to manage whilst increasing their self-esteem and motivation. This intervention focuses on ‘stopping and thinking’ as well as the importance of gathering information about something before responding.
Children are encouraged to brainstorm ideas on alternative ways to respond to situations and are able to practice the skills they are taught during the sessions.
ACCESS involves 12 group sessions, facilitated by both Intervention Facilitators as well as Gymnasium staff.
Pre Training Requirements for Facilitators:
- NOMS Intervention Services Core Skills assessed training (4 days)
