NOMS Intervention – Starving The Anger Gremlin
Summary:
Starving The Anger Gremlin is a NOMS YPE Approved Intervention (Prison Service Order [PSO] 4350: Effective Regime Interventions: Young People- Annex) which focuses on motivating young people to recognise why they get angry and the impact anger has on themselves and other.
Description:
Starving The Anger Gremlin is based on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy as it includes understanding their thoughts and feelings when they display aggressive behaviour.
The intervention starts with discussing what anger is, what anger means to them and identifying how often they get angry. Young people are encouraged to explore whether the reason they respond in particular ways to certain situations is due to learnt behaviour, personal beliefs or external factors. Starving The Anger Gremlin implies that when we begin to think irrationally or negatively about a situation, this leads to an angry reaction. On the other hand, if we are able to use the appropriate techniques such as distractions or challenging irrational thoughts, we are able to express our anger in the right way.
The young person is given scenarios so they can practice these skills during the sessions. Another topic covered in Starving The Anger Gremlin is the effect their anger has on themselves and those around them, in terms of physical health, relationships with others and their emotions.
Starving The Anger Gremlin can be delivered in a group or on an individual basis. Groupwork consists of seven group sessions and three individual sessions. When delivered on an individual basis, frequency of sessions varies according to need.
