Aims:

  • Support Community Panel Members
  • Ensure high quality of work from Community Panel Members

 

 

Description:

Following positive recruitment of potential Community Panel Members (CPM), they are provided with four days training, which, along with the core training (such as running panels etc.) include the following topics:

  • Trauma recovery model
  • Attachment theory
  • Empathy
  • Over representation of BAME young people and young people (including Lammy Review)
  • Learning and communication difficulties

furthermore, the CPM are provided with presentations from:

  • The Bristol YOT Speech and Language Therapist
  • Existing Panel Member to talk about role
  • Representative from Off The Record (which is a free and confidential mental health support and information for young people aged 11-25 in Bristol), including young people who use the service

Implementing the Practice:

  • Recruitment takes place once a year and is facilitated by the Restorative Justice Co-ordinator
  • CPM are expected to attend an initial interview (including DBS discloser and be able to provide two references), complete the 4-day training, following which they are expected to complete two live panel observations
  • Training package is updated on a needs basis by the Restorative Justice Co-ordinator, material and speakers may vary according to any relevant changes in knowledge, legislation and research
  • Once CPM are successful, they are expected to attend at least three bi-monthly Panel Member Support Group meetings per year
    The Support Group is from 6pm to 8pm in the evening with an hour of relevant training and an hours meeting around business as usual activities
