Out of Court Disposal Workshop Materials – East Riding Youth Offending Service (2020)

Summary:  Training materials for staff, from East Riding of Yorkshire youth justice service concerning out of court disposals.

 

 

Aims:

  • Disseminate process around out of court disposals

 

 

Description:
Following their outstanding HMIP Inspection (2019), East Riding of Yorkshire YOS have delivered a workshop on their processes around out of court disposals and some of the innovative work they have been doing as part of the YJB ‘Justice in Practice’ pathfinder events. They have produced a full day workshop package which includes slides, supplementary materials and videos.

 

 

How might you use it?

The full package produced by East Riding has been made available here. This can be delivered to your teams as a training package/workshop or used in parts as you feel is appropriate. It is particularly relevant for any members of staff working on out of court disposals, diversion and restorative justice officers/victim workers. The slides, which can be presented to your teams, are accessed via the prezi links named Session 1, 2, 3 and 4.

This case study, which is based on a real life case, is designed to be used with groups to prompt discussion about what outcome you would reach and why. Ideally this is done in groups of 8, with each person playing a different role in the decision-making panel, listed below with associated information sheet, (for smaller groups people can take more than one role). There is a document for each role/person which gives the information they need to present the case from their perspective. This should be read out to the panel and each person- perspective presented

Doc 4  OOCD report (with outcome) – this should be provided at the end after the discussion.

 

Documents 1-3 provide additional information for the ‘panel’ within the role play to help them come to a decision and should be provided to the group along with the role play sheets. Document 4 (with outcome) is to be provided at the end for comparison, this explains what actually happened with this real life case and will enable some additional discussion comparing the role play panel- decision to what was actually decided. Note: there is nothing to say the real life outcome is right compared to other options, it- around the discussion and rationale behind any recommended decisions.

 

 

  • Session 4 – Innovation – this sessions looks at some of the innovative ways East Riding have worked with their young people.

 

To be played at the end of session 4 presentation: Ashton- story – a young man who put his thoughts and feelings into a rap. This is the rap he has written.

There is an example intervention plan, which can be shared with your teams.

The feedback form can be used if you deliver the workshop as a whole and you would like gather feedback on the session and ask how your team think they could implement the ideas into their practice. This could also be done via team discussion, the form is there as an option.
