Project X:Year 6 Transition Project at Kingston and Richmond Youth Justice Service
Summary:
Kingston and Richmond youth justice service are supporting children to successfully transition to secondary school through its year 6 transition project: Project X. It aims to not only to support children to move from primary to secondary school, but also identify the triggers and potential strategies to help children to thrive in a school setting.
Description:
Project X is based within the Targeted Youth Support (TYS) Service and is part of the prevention and diversion strand of the youth justice service. The team works with children vulnerable to criminal exploitation and those who have been victims of serious violence and theft. They focus on prevention and early interventions, including Xcast, a podcast series, Xercise sessions to improve mental health and Xplained, a tier 2 substance misuse service that provides targeted group work in schools. The project also provides supplementary support (alongside specialist services) to help children at high risk of serious harm. This transformative project engages children at reachable teachable moments to prevent offending and avoid them entering the youth justice system. Kingston and Richmond youth justice service have shared an overview of the interventions offered to children through Project X.
The project was initially funded by the Violence Reduction Unit. However, due to its success and the impact on children and the community, the project has expanded through collaborative commissioning using different funding streams. These include NHS England, Public Health, Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC), Your Choice programme and Achieving for Children.
