Signs and Indicators Template of Sexual Abuse – Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse (February 2022)

Summary

The Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse have published a sign and indicator template to support professionals gathering the wider signs and indicators of sexual abuse to build a picture of their concerns.

Description

The Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse have published sign and indicator template (also available in Welsh) to support professionals gathering the wider signs and indicators of sexual abuse to build a picture of their concerns.

The template provides a starting point to prompt further exploration and should be used dynamically rather than as a one-off, as more information may emerge over time.  The Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse have also created a video explaining how best to use the template, which may also be of interest.

The template is designed to inform practice, rather than determine, decision-making and it is not a risk assessment tool or substitute for further observation or for directly communicating with children and their families. The resource should be used to complement local practices if appropriate.

Although children may find it difficult to tell professionals about the harm they are experiencing they may show other emotional, behavioural and physical signs of their abuse.  It is therefore essential that professionals have the knowledge, skills and confidence to recognise when children might be showing them that something is wrong, as well as the potential indicators of sexually abusive behaviour in those who may be abusing them.
