Description
The University of Bedfordshire, in partnership with the South and West Yorkshire Consortium, and utilising the data collected by the Consortium, considered areas for further research with regard to over-representation and children looked after. The Consortium identified that children looked after were more likely to be detained than their non-care equivalents, however little is known about the factors leading to such over-representation or the differential experiences of children in care while in detention.
As a result, the University of Bedfordshire conducted a literature review – Surviving Incarceration report and executive summary which included 48 children from the South and West Yorkshire Resettlement Consortium cohort. Interviews took place in both custody and the community and with professionals. This was followed by case file analysis. Professional interviews were carried out and a report, with recommendations, subsequently published – surviving incarceration: the pathways of looked after and non-looked after children into, through and out of custody.
