Weapons Intervention Toolkit – Oxfordshire Youth Justice and Exploitation Service (Updated December 2022)

Summary:

Oxfordshire Youth Justice and Exploitation Service have shared their weapons awareness toolkit aimed at supporting children to better understand the reasons behind why some young people carry weapons and learn positive social and relational skills to manage their personal safety and risk in the community.

Description:

Oxfordshire Youth Justice and Exploitation Service have shared their weapons intervention toolkit. The toolkit uses a cognitive behavioural therapy-based approach and was developed in consultation with Oxfordshire’s Forensic CAMHS service to ensure it was informed by research and evidence around ‘what works’ with children. The toolkit focuses on supporting children to build the skills required to understand their own story, the reason they carried a weapon, and identify ways to build positive social skills to manage their personal safety in the community. The structure of the course includes:

  • Offence Analysis and Introduction to CBT
  • Understanding the adolescent brain and how we respond to threat
  • Stories we tell ourselves and re-framing
  • Protective behaviours and understanding risk
  • Skill building in de-escalation and locus of control
  • The law around weapon carrying
  • Additional session material around group-based conflict
