Whispers equine assisted learning programme
Summary:
Located in Neath Port Talbot, Wales, the Whispers equine assisted learning (EAL) programme is a unique trauma-informed intervention. Delivered in partnership with the local youth justice service and social services, the programme combines the benefits of experiential learning involving horses with expert guidance from trained facilitators. This hands-on learning method supports children who have experienced various forms of trauma and are involved with statutory services.
Description:
The Whispers equine assisted learning programme was created in 2021 by sisters Debbie Stone and Laura Davies: two horse enthusiasts, qualified social workers and trauma-informed mental health practitioners. The programme was developed in response to the negative impacts of the Covid pandemic on children’s mental health, and aims to use the therapeutic benefits of horses to support children.
The programme uses person-centred and trauma-informed approaches, implementing practices that prioritise children’s individual needs and wellbeing. Each session is designed to complement their existing care and support plans.
The project has been successful across Neath Port Talbot (NPT). Funding from Neath Port Talbot Youth Justice Service through the Early Intervention Panel and the Think Family Partnership has significantly expanded the programme. The NPT Council has also made significant contributions to the programme’s success, including access to trauma-informed training, which has been instrumental in shaping the approach to equine-assisted work, enhancing the therapeutic impact of the programme on children’s mental health.
A deep-dive report evaluating the success of the EAL programme has been conducted by Hwb Doeth.
