  • Improving communication skills with the aim of getting young people to engage in a personal goal setting approach
  • Providing young people the opportunity to develop and learn new skills to increase self-esteem and enhance well being

The Tuned In - Music Therapy Project is a program suitable for all young people. The sessions are delivered and written by our qualified music therapist with the aim to engage and motivate young people to support them to set personal goals. The above, is believed to have a positive impact on the self-esteem and general wellbeing of the young people.

The Music Therapist focuses on early identification of potential learning and communication challenges and uses a wide range of approaches and learning styles to engage young people. The sessions act as a conduit to enable discussion and dialogue with a focus on defusing potentially difficult situations and creating a positive learning environment.

Young people are supported to follow their own interests and needs in the sessions, choosing to:

  • Use music software to write music
  • Explore and learn new skills on musical instruments
  • Write and record songs
  • Share their own musical tastes
  • Use some of the time to talk and gain some 1:1 support

Implementing the practice:

  • Wakefield Youth Offending Team (YOT) run the sessions from the YOT building, which is a safe environment to support the making and recording of music.
  • Wakefield YOT had to purchase the relevant computer hardware as well as instruments and microphones.
  • Although a background is music is not essential for staff some investment in training from a music technology professional would help enhance the musical experience.
  • Wakefield YOT promote the project with stakeholders such as Full Joint Inspection and YOT Boards.
  • The Therapist at Wakefield YOT has extended her remit to include working with Pupil Referral Units, Children’s homes and Leaving Care Services within Wakefield authority.
