Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender or Exploring: Resources for Children – Various UK Organisations (Updated November 2022)

Summary: Access to a variety of sources of information and resources for practitioner, families and children who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or exploring. 




Access to a variety of sources of information and resources for practitioner, families and children who are gay, bisexual, transgender or exploring. The below list is not exhaustive and there may be local projects that may be better suited and applicable.


The Albert Kennedy Trust – supports LGBTQ+ children and young people aged 16-25 in the UK who are facing or experiencing homelessness or living in a hostile environment. The trust also support children and young people into employment, education or training.


All About Trans - is a national project that seeks to change the way the media tell stories about transgender and non-binary people.


Allsorts Youth Project - supports children and young people under 26 who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or exploring their sexual orientation and/or gender identity and their families.


Gendered Intelligence - is a registered charity that exists to increase understandings of gender diversity and improve transgender people's quality of life. They work with the transgender community and those who impact on transgender lives, they specialise in supporting young transgender people under the age of 21.


Gender Identity Development Service - is a specialised clinic for children and young people presenting with difficulties with their gender identity. They are commissioned by NHS England. Some people feel uncomfortable with the gender they were assigned at birth whilst others are unhappy with the gender role that society requires. The service supports people to explore their feelings and choose the path that best suits their ideals.


The Gender Identity Research & Education Society - is a UK wide organisation whose purpose is to improve the lives of transgender and gender diverse people of all ages, including those who are non-binary and non-gender.


Mermaids - supports transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse children and young people until their 20th birthday, as well as their families and professionals involved in their care.


Stonewall - provide information, support and guidance on LGBTQ+ inclusion. They have a section on best practice, toolkits and resources aimed at schools but may be of interest for youth justice services.

- is a national charity focused on improving the lives of trans and non-binary people in the UK.
