Engagement Resource Tool ‘Let’s work together to stop offending and achieve a good life’ - West Mercia Youth Justice Service (October 2021)

Summary:  An engagement resource for working with children and their families/carers created by West Mercia Youth Justice Service.

• To promote a child focused approach to working with children and their families in the initial stages of their time with the YJS and throughout their journey with youth justice

West Mercia Youth Justice Service have created and established ‘Let’s work together to stop offending and achieve a good life’ engagement tool. The tools supports children and their families through their initial stages of contract with the Service.

The tool supports children feeling:
• they are being listened to.
• they are supported in expressing their views.
• their views are taken into account.
• involved in the decision-making processes.

The tool further support practitioners to engage children effectively with their plan. This ensure that children understand their targets, thereby increasing the likelihood of engaging and achieving those.

The tool is also used by the Service to evidence in practice that they are meeting self-assessment requirements in their recording as outlined within YJB ‘How to undertake a self-assessment of national standards’

There are five sessions:

  1. Getting to know you...
  2. What to expect
  3. Who can help?
  4. Who has been affected?
  5. Let’s plan together!

Implementing the practice:

• The tool is part of the youth justice service induction programme for all children
• The tool is discussed annually at the youth justice service Participation Group at leadership meeting and with staff to ensure that the content is still relevant and up to date.
• All staff have manual copy of the tool and a specially designed plastic work case, to be used however and whenever needed and to store information, leaflets, cards, linked to the stages.
• The tool is electronic and can be printed.
