Youth Justice Skills Matrix – Youth Justice Board (July 2023)

Summary Access to the youth justice skills matrix, which identifies the core skills needed by staff for working with children in the justice system.

 

 

Description

The Youth Justice Board has published a revised youth justice skills and knowledge matrix (2023).  The matrix is designed for the whole of the youth justice workforce and can be used for job descriptions, appraisals, training needs analysis and restructures.

 

The Matrix covers the following 8 areas:

  • Child Development – Implications for Youth Justice Practice
    • Child development in the Youth Justice system
  • Engagement and Communication
    • Effective communication and engagement with children, families and carers
  • Assessment
    • Assessment and identification of strengths and risks to foster positive outcomes
  • Effective Practice
    • Prepare, deliver, implement, monitor and evaluate interventions and promote reflective practice
  • Multi- Agency working, advocacy and brokerage skills and sharing information
    • Multi- agency working and sharing information
  • Risk of Harm
    • Managing Risk for the child and their wider community
  • Transitions
    • Supporting effective transitions of children in the youth justice system
  • Safeguarding
    • Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
